Draft Government Policy Statement on land transport 2024

The Minister of Transport has released the draft Government Policy Statement on land transport (GPS) 2024 for feedback. The draft GPS outlines the Government’s plan for investing in land transport over the next 10 years by directing $7 billion per year in expenditure from the National Land Transport Fund.

Shipping fire risk cause of concern for global insurer

An annual review of shipping by multinational insurer Allianz has raised concern about the ongoing risk of hull and cargo fires. The 2023 Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty (AGCS) Safety & Shipping Review specifically singles out decarbonisation and new types of cargo being transported on vessels, including EVs and battery-powered goods.

Proposed prohibition on fluorinated gases deferred

In November 2023 the Ministry for the Environment (MfE) issued a consultation document on Proposed measures to reduce the environmental impact of fluorinated gases. Included in the document were proposed timelines to prohibit the import of equipment containing certain hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), including those contained in vehicle air-conditioning by January 2025 for new vehicles (and January 2028 for used). The MfE has since notified stakeholders that it has decided not to continue with these proposals.
